My guest yesterday was a local business owner, Juan M who also fished the FLW series among other tournament trails. He was pretty sharp and extremely technical. Cool dude! I was surprised that we missed the morning bite despite being there early, but still made out pretty good. I was not counting but we had well over 100.
I'll never forget this trip because a gator took my bass just as I was kneeling down to lip him. Never saw this bruiser coming. He came from under the boat like a great white shark and was a foot over the gunnel with mouth wide open. I was all shook up for many minutes afterwards and very grateful that neither me or Juan were not injured.

I'm telling you, you are indeed: "Bassadile Shane-dee!"
That's wild, Shane... might have to start using a Boga Grip! _________________

Gheenoe forum member, "Just Bill" spent a couple of days with me fly fishing for everglades bass. Bill had talked about coming down a couple of years ago and wanted to get this off his bucket mouth list.
Bill and I went deep into the swamp to get into some real peaceful waters. The bass and alligators were wall to wall. Bill was working the Gugler and Wooly Bugger for the most of two days. One would work well for a while and then die off and he would pick up the other. It was on pretty heavy the first day with a awesome morning and afternoon bite. Bill landed at least 75 the first day. I noticed that it is much harder to land a fly hooked bass vs. a spinning or bait cast caught bass.
The second day was a bit slower but Bill picked up some real nice bass. Bill picked up a spinning outfit for a couple of cast and landed 4 or 5 and went right back to the fly. The picture below should say. I'am Bill Rhodes and I have gone orange.
This was an awesome trip with well over 75 bass the first day and 25 or so the second day. All but 10 or so were tricked by Bills fly. Bill is a great guy with a ton of fly fishing knowledge and allot of interesting stories. I really enjoyed your company Bill!

The hot weather and the daily afternoon thunderstorms are the beginning of the best fishing time for the Florida Everglades. This time of the year usually produces the biggest bass and often the most bass for the average South Florida angler. This is the time I will break out the top water frogs and big shad crank and jerk baits, which are always a big fish favorite. This season I have incorporated the MV 11.5" monster worm into the bag of tricks. It is made by JD's Custom Baits. It is a big bass killer! I'am hearing rumors that the research and development team at JD's is field testing a 16" worm at a local south Florida tournament this weekend. I want to see that worm!
My guest this trip was Steve and his son Clay Killgore from Birmingham, Al. Clay just graduated from high school and is off to the University of Alabama. His dad wanted to do something cool with him before he leaves for school. I feel bad for him cause he is gonna get beat by both Florida and LSU this year. Both of these guys were great anglers but Clay had crazy madfish skills.
I have had bigger bass days this year but this trip produced a better quantity of bigger bass. My tip of the week is to go large and see what happens.

Despite the water being extremely high in the swamp, the best fishing in the southern everglades is going off now. I needed some fish for a fish fry lunch. Put the jeep in 4WD and made out for the canal. It was pretty quick work, ten cast and a five fish limit. All caught on a Rapala SR7. *Warning to all bank beaters* The gators are pretty hostile now and really don't mind charging you on the bank. Keep all fish off the ground. I like to hang mine in the trees.

On thursday I fished "Alligator Alley" for the first time. I was with Dan from JD'sCustomBaits. Dan was doing field testing on a new alligator prototype rubber bait.
I have been in south Florida now for almost 12 years and driven over the Alley countless times but never stopped to fish it. We put in at MM44 or something like that. Fishing next to a major interstate was extremely loud compared to the serene back country areas I frequent. I was sporting a goose egg until Dan figured that we needed to find moving water. When we found it we scored 6 or 7 bass. Here is my first bass from "Alligator Alley". He hit a weightless jdscustombaits monster worm with a 5/0 hook.

It's just way too hot to do a all day trip into the glades. My temp gauge read 98-100 on the last two trips into the glades. Near 100% humidity and a heat index of up too 121 degrees. No one caught a moster but everyone was having the time of their life.
First batter up was Sheldon and his brother whos name eludes me at this time. They caught well over 80 bass, mostly on a wacky rigged Senko. Even with an exposed hook Sheldon was wiffing at allot of bass. After I told Sheldon he set the hook like a girl he really picked up his game and started loading the cooler with some nice bass.
Next up was Garry. Garry had never caught a bass but has just recently got the salt water fishing bug. Garry caught 20 bass on the JD'sCustomBaits Junior Monster Worms on a WobbleHead lure. He was blown away with the bass fishing action and the wildlife of the everglades. Since he was alone I had the pleasure of wetting a line and busting up some bass. Most of my bass came on the same bait but had 6 bass on a "Beast" by JD'sCustomBaits. It really acts like a snake. Each fish I caught hit the head just like it was taking a snake. I have made up my mind that no bait is too big for a bass. Go get em!

I had Garry from the Gheenoe forum in the glades with me. Garry was a cool cat and I look forward to fishing with him again. It was brutally hot and the fishing was somewhat off as expected. None the less, Garry and I boated somewhere around <100> bass. Most were in the 2#-4# range with a dozen or so over 4#'s. Most were caught using a Rapala SR5, Garry Yamamot Senko, Zoom Flukes, and JD'sCustomBaits worms on the WobbloeHead Lure. Check out the dead 8ft. alligator. Another gator was dragging it around the canal.

Shane, I hate those off days... almost makes you wonder why you even went out at all.

I was trolling the Oleta River and Haulover Inlet area today. I was using a Rapala Husky Jerk and Rapala X-Raps on 10# P-Line w/30# leader. Hooked up on several cuda and ladyfish before I got blownup on this Barracuda. The fight was on for over 35 minutes. It was the best fight I have had in over two years. A nice lady on a stand up surfboard came over and took the picture for me.

Capt. Wayne Gilbert brought his nephew Frankie out to his airboat camp for some maitenance work. This was Frankie's second trip to the camp in the last month and he was itching to get a bass. I droped by for a visit and ended up taking Frankie fishing. He had caught alot of fish but never got a big one. You can see where this is going, huh? It wasn't too long before Frankie feeds a gator one of my Rapala SR5's. After that loss I figured this was going to be an expensive afternoon (I just didn't know how bad a loss at the time) so I switched him to soft plastics. I put a Garry Yamamoto Senko (wacky) on one of my carrot sticks and let him go to work. I was throwing some JD'sCustomBaits, mostly the monster worms. He and I caught over 30 bass in 2 hours standing on the bank. We could have caught alot more but half the time we were swatting skeeters and running from gators. I hear him holler "I think this is a big one". Sure enough Frankie had hung into a full grown everglades bass. He made pretty quick work of the bass and I lipped it onto the bank for him. Frankie was stoked to the max, with high fives and some good ole redneck shouts piercing the glades. This bass was Frankies' personal best. As far as size goes in the south central everglades, Frankies bass is about as good as you can expect.
I had to save the best picture for last. Like I said up top, I just didn't know how expensive the afternoon was going to get. The day before i had caught a lil bass and could see this alligator rushing towards me. Usually I can get them to back off but this fella just would not stop. I ran like a kid and dove into the front seat of my jeep landing in the middle of my tackel box, cooler and stick shifter. When I peered out the window the gators head was on my side steps. Apparantly I damaged my favorite carrot stick when I did the superman flight. When I got back to fishing I could hear some creeking coming from the rod on each cast. While fishing with Frankie it snaped on a hookset. No complaints though. It was my favorite rod and between me and my clients it has hauled in over 2000 fish.
