The Florida everglades bass fishing is going off right now in the everglades. In the 11 years of fishing the glades, I've never experienced the bass turning on so early in the year in south Florida. The absence of a Florida hurricane this year has left the southern most portions of the everglades at below normal water levels for this time of the year.

1-2-2010 Tuesday, I had the pleasure of taking Keith Johnson of Texarkana, Ark. into the swamp for a bassing adventure. The previous day we had had 5-7 inches of rain in the glades and this day was forecast to be wet as well. It was overcast all morning. Overcast in the morning means top water in my book. We started with a Zoom Horny Toad frog. After at least 60 bass to 3 1/2 lbs. the bite died off and the sun was breaking through. We fished the rest of the day with Zoom trick worms and Zoom super flukes. Keith and I finished the day with over 150 bass and some wild alligator footage.

I had the Turner brothers from Marrouge, La. and Hot Springs, Ark with me for 2 days. These fellas were a riot. One was a Baptist minister and the other a farmer. They kept me laughing both days. The fishing was still red hot but most were in the 1-3 lb. range. Many fish were caught on the Rogue floating twitch bait but most came on the Yamamoto Senko (wacky rigged) and the Zoom tick worm (Texas rigged). They caught close to 200 the first day and 75 this morning. Seems the mud fish was taking a liking to Barry....he boated 6 of them.

If you haven't hit the glades this year...... go get em'.

Not at all, Shane. Even now during pre-spawn, that's still some unbelieveable numbers.

Now Brother Capt the boys and I been doin a little calculatin down to LEMs and we come up with over a hundered fish per day. We're wonderin what the limits are down in the glades and iffin any where thrown back. That seems like some of the reasons catches have to be regulated. EverGlades is a national park and we hate to see abuse of our GOD given natural resources

Tuna, sometimes I wonder about you-- whether or not your elevator makes it to the penthouse, or if it's just temporarily stuck between floors. Very Happy

Bill, don't even bother to figure it out brother!

Capt. Not that I'm not impressed, but that's kinda business as usual for you and your area. We're still all freezing our bobba's off up here and aren't even close to being in fishing mode yet. Soon, but not just yet. Maybe not everyone is the same, but that's me at least.

This was a nasty week with cold temps and gusting N.W. winds howling most of the time. Jack and Linda Dempsey from Wisconsin were down for looking to do something fun while down. She wanted to see some alligators and Jack wanted some bass. Fortunately for them I had both. The winds were lying down on wednesday night so we decided that thursday was going to be doable.
The Bass Monster took us to the heart of the glades where I was sure we could accomplish both goals of seeing some alligators and catching a few bass. We probably saw 500-600 alligators and Jack boated nearly 100 bass in the 8 hour trip. Both were estatic and said that this was the best thing they had done on there vacation.

March is typically the busiest month for me. This march has been the best in many years. With the water warming up the bass would move up to spawning areas then a cold front would push them back to their staging areas. This past weekend we finally saw the beds being worked by both the male and female. The last half of the second week we finally started putting some respectable bass in the boat. All march trips boated over 100 bass except one......but they had never caught a fish before so it was cool. I will say that the january freeze killed the oscar, cyclid and peacock bite. This year has yet to yeild up any of the exotics for my parties. The bowfin bite has been through the roof, catching some good ones to 12#'s. I have noticed that many more of the everglades bass are cut and beat up like I have never seen in years past. I would attribute this to being hunted by the bowfin. I would never have guessed that a bowfin would attack a bass, but I saw it firsthand last week as we were bringing in a bass. This is probably not unusual behavior but in years past they have had more choices like the oscar and cyclid. The bait of choice this year has been a Garry Yamamoto 5" senko figged with a "O" ring and a EWG #2 hook. I am eagerly looking forward to the postspawn feeding freenzy which is soon to come. Till next time,
Capt. Shane

The last week of March and the first of April have been the peak of the spawn in the southern portion of the Glades. We have been seeing them paired up on beds and have caught both spawners and post spawners. The weather has been incredibly mild in the mornings and heating up nicely in the afternoons. Water temps have remained consistent and this should be the last few weeks of the spawn. I'am looking forward to the annual post spawn feeding frenzy that will be kicking off over the next few weeks. Many of the bigger bass caught in the everglades will be hung in April. So if you get the chance to hit the swamp now is the time.

This past week was fish filled and I had parties from the Chicago Ill., Oklahoma, Long Island NY, and Knoxville Tenn. First up was Joe and the "Rooster" from Long Island. Joe was the first person I ever dumped out of the boat. It was the funniest moment in all my years of guiding. I have never seen a big guy get out of the water so quick! Fortunately no gators were in striking distance. Here are a couple from Joe and his dad "Rooster".

Next up were Mark and his son Joel. Mark is the creator of the "Ball Stack" now being used by major league teams across the country. His products can be seen at www.ballstack.com Mark asked about the Value Jet plane crash in the everglades back in the 90's. his best friend was on the plane and it was an honor to stop by the monument and give him a few minutes alone in memory of his friend. Back to fishing... these guys tore them up with over a hundred bass caught. Joel had one on for a brief moment which was by far the biggest bass I have ever seen in person. Unfortunately the line ended up parting after a monster struggle.

Next up was John from Chicago and his buddies Todd and Huey from Ok. We caught a ton of bass but the larger bass were not chewing despite a noble effort by all anglers.
Fishing was tougher this day which was a bummer considering John had fished with me on the "Best" day I have ever seen in the everglades. During the summer of 2007, John and I caught over 200 bass on topwater frogs during a drizzling rain soaked day.

The last trip of the week was John and Nick from south Florida. These brothers have fished with me for the last four years. They caught allot of fish and many brotherly insults were passed back and forth making for a very entertaining day in the swamp.

Fish on,
Capt. Shane Procell
